DVD-R was the original blank recordable DVD released in 2000, it records at a CONSTANT bit rate. Alot of older dvd players are not able to read a DVD-R disc.

DVD+R is the more modern version of the DVD-R. It records at a variable bit rate and DVD+R discs are more compatible in old dvd players.
