I think it's an attempt to try to weaken the arguments for atheism. To stop believers questioning religion, they say everybody is religious, even those satan-worshipping, baby-eating atheists. It's not the best propaganda ever - no atheists in foxholes, and describing the 9/11 terrorists as 'godless' are much more direct examples of propaganda.

Because it is easier to understand when it's compared with something people are more familiar with. Plus, atheism may not always in all places and times have been a reaction to religious movements; it is possible that it was simply the status quo, but as far as we know in history, and even in the origin of the word itself (a=without, theos = god), the atheist movement, or way of life, or whatever you want to call it, is a reaction to existing religions. It's therefore connected to religion in a certain way. It's a rational, intelligent reaction no doubt, but a reaction nonetheless.

Betti...I am a Christian. I think sometimes atheism gets labeled a religion simply because it represents an opposite and many people do not even know what the words atheist and theist mean.

I do not like to get labeled with "all you Christians" so I understand.

Its a psychological/sociological necessity. All people have a belief ssytem--they have to. such a belief system--whatever it is--is a set of values and assumptions about what is "true" or "good" and, conversly, what is "false" or "bad." Such beliefs/valuations are accepted, not proven. Despite the claims of adherants of various belief systems, none can be "proven" in the sense a scientific fact can be proven.

Those beliefs are inevitable--they are our view of what our relationship to the world and other people. And everyone has a deep psychological need to belive they are acting in accordance with what is true or good. Atheism includes such a set of beliefs and values--which the atheist has a strong emotional need to protect and defend. In shortt, it amounts to a religious--or at least religion-like---faith.

They can't handle the thought of someone living without religion, so they make atheism a religion in their minds.

Religion requires beliveing in some type of deity. Atheist don't believe in deities. It would make absolutely no sense. It wouid be like trying to make talking on the phone into an exercise.

I know exactly what you mean. Its so funny to watch these morons religionize atheism and the go around persecuting everyone else like zealots. lol

The truth is the ones that do this (not all atheists) do it because deep down they realize they can't understand religion. Its not that they are smarter than religious people but that they have more limited thought. They are too egotistical to admit this to themselves so they persecute religious people to convince themselves they are smarter.

I don't know. I had been an Agnostic before becoming a Muslim, so I actually have a decent understanding of what being an Atheist is. It's not anything like any religion. I don't understand why people assume that.

They desire a level playing field so instead of improving their situation they want to deter ours.

Course its all mute anyways... because there is no faith or mysticism involved with the core elements of atheism. No god/gods, that simple, not sure why they can't grasp that. Lack of proof apparently isnt a problem for most of the world.

We are against religion, and we "worship" the fact we are free from religious bondage. So, in a twisted sense it is a religion, despite the fact we arn't one.
