They closed the plant in 2000 as a part of restructuring effort. Many of the cars in their Oldsmobile line simply competed wit hother GM products rather than adding customers to the GM family.
The fact that it didn't have a light truck was cited as another reason for the close- as well as diminshed sales.

I really don't know. They needed to dump something, but it definitely should have been Buick. Not that Buick isn't doing all right now- My uncle has a Lucerne, and it's a great ride for the money- but a lot more people were devoted to Oldsmobile than Buick. Buick still has the image of old person's car, and though Oldsmobile was pretty close to that, I believe it could have done better than Buick, given the same models.

Sales. Olds was ordered to revamp to correct its flagging sales, but it was a little too little, a little too late. Sad, since it was one of my favorite GM marques. Buick was against the wall at the same time, along with Saturn. Of those three, Olds drew the short straw.
Most industry folks think that GM is going to rework Saturn to be the new "Oldsmobile", in other words, attracting Olds' customer base to Saturn with the same type of cars that Olds used to sell. GMs unspoken plan to move Saturn up into the empty spot that Olds left behind seems to be in-motion.
As an aside, I fear that if GM acquires Chrysler, we will soon be seeing Suzuki 300Cs and Suzuki Vipers.

What has GM done lately that you would consider a good idea. Now the rumor mill has it that there looking into Chrysler. Let's hope not. To drop Oldsmobile and replace it with the junk Chrysler produces would be a big mistake.

It wasn't selling. If they aren't making money, they aren't going to keep spending money to produce the car.
One of GM's big problems is there is too much redundancy between the Buick, Chevy, Pontiac and Cadillac lines. Oldsmobile was just one more name plate they had to produce for the same cars.

They have too many different lines of the same car so they're streamlining, the brand wasn't selling as well as it used to plus there is much duplication at GM you'll probably see more streamlining before the decade ends.
