____________An onion a day?___________________

chivesSound a bit far-fetched? It's actually not such a bad idea healthwise. Onions are highly recommended for people trying to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and infections. Like most vegetables, sweet, yellow onions are fat- and cholesterol-free, and contain very little sodium.

About Onions: Onion Nutrition

Onions are low in calories yet add abundant flavor to a wide variety of foods. With only 30 calories per serving, onions are sodium, fat, and cholesterol free, and provide dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and other key nutrients.

Higher intakes of fruits and vegetables have been associated with a variety of health benefits. Research shows that onions may help guard against many chronic diseases. That's probably because onions contain generous amounts of a flavonoid called quercetin. Other sources are tea and apples, but research shows that absorption of quercetin from onions is twice that from tea and more than three times that from apples. Studies have shown that quercetin protects against cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

In addition, onions contain a variety of other naturally occurring chemicals known as organosulfur compounds that have been linked to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Onion extracts are used by home-remedy enthusiasts in treating coughs and colds, bronchitis, asthma and bronchial spasms.

They are also rich in flavenoids which are proven to protect against cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, eczema, and atherosclerosis. They also contain anti-clotting agents and can help suppress platelet clumping. Consumed in larger quantities, onions have also been proven to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics and are also good for fighting pain and inflammation in the joints for those that suffer from various forms of arthritis and can reverse the damage done from cortizone treatments.

They are low in calories and pretty much absent of fat, cholesterol and sodium. Different varieties are also a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium.

Onions are high in energy and water content. They are low in calories, and have a generous amount of B6, B1, and Folic acid.

Onions contain chemicals which help fight the free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals cause disease and destruction to cells which are linked to at least 60 diseases.

To make onions milder, soak them in milk or pour boiling water over slices and let stand. Rinse with cold water.

When a person eats at least 1/2 a raw onion a day, their good type HDL cholesterol goes up an average of 30%. Onions increase circulation, lower blood pressure, and prevent blood clotting.

Onions are not great for you, though they don't cause any harm either, except for a little crying and clearing the sinuses a bit. They are a decent source of vitamin C, and contain quite a few other vitamins, but it isn't really a great vegetable nutritionally.
