Yeah, that's a popular shortcut for texting from an alphanumeric keypad (such as on cell phones), although it goes back a bit more, to the early days of BBS. For hunt and peck typists on a standard QWERTY keyboard, it's easier to find, for example, the single character 8 than the various letter combinations that sound the same. For touch typists, standard spellings are easier. Other uses of numbers for letters are 3 for E, 5 for S, etc. It's a little harder to read, and so it constitutes a sort of secret code, with the social separation factors that are common to all secret codes.
