Something off the beaten path... 2 and 1/2 hours north of LA, in the city Los Alamos, is a little 6-room themed bed and breakfast called the Victorian Mansion. Check this website:

The rooms are not the most modern - which is sort of the point - but extremely more modern than you expect!! And if you pick the Paris room, you will think your are really in Paris when you wake up!

Anyway, you have to make reservations well in advance and there isn't much to do around except some exellent wine tasting within 10 minutes (Firestone Winery, Sunstone, Gainey and many many others). It's perfect for a romantic "getaway" and you won't really want to leave!

I hope you have a great time!

A really cool hotel in LA is called The Standard. It is right on the Sunset Strip. VERY FUNKY! Sort of futuristic but what people thought would be futuristic in the 70's. Egg chairs hanging from the ceiling. Behind the check in at night is a tank with a girl laying down in it VERY COOL! There is also a good restaurant and an excellent trendy bar.

Ritz Carlton. It keeps the poor away, and if you're not one, it will make you poor.
