Police Officers are trained to drive at a higher standard than the average UK motorist and the answering of Police hand held radios, which look like mobile phones may be operationally required whilst driving. For instance if a patrol car is being driven by an Officer crewed on his own how impractical would it be to find a safe place to pull over and answer the radio? Sometimes the Officer has to answer the radio whilst driving in order to get to the scene of an incident as quickly as possible. Stop being a hater and get behind your local Police. They have a tough job to do as it is without people like you complaining about things you don't understand.

The vehicle must be stationary, lawfully parked, engine off. Stationary at traffic lights, road works etc is still an offence. If you just pull over you may still be causing an obstruction or a danger to other road users, also an offence. Not being in proper control of a vehicle and not being in a position to have a proper view are also endorsable offences. So reaching into the glove box for sweeties, reading maps, programming sat navs, brushing your hair, shaving, eating, drinking and a whole host of similar activities could get you £60 and 3 points. Keep both hands on the wheel and pay attention.

Radios do not come under the same legislation as mobile phones which is why you see Police officers using them whilst driving. And to save any confusion, the new radios are shaped like mobile phones these days. In answer to the actual question, it's usually people like you that have been caught and come on here complaining about the Police doing it.

Radios are legal in vehicles while being driven on the move. Taxi drivers and the like have them and there's no problem with it.
All police cars in my force a re fitted with hand free kits as we generally use only one sort of mobile phone.
While driving my own car I do not under any circumstances use my mobile phone while driving full stop................................
So my friend, I think as usual with so many anti Police comments it's born out of ignorance and not knowing the true facts of the law.
Mobile phones can and have been proved to be dangerous while driving. You even get people texting while driving, the morons.

RADIOS ARE PERFECTLY LEGAL TO USE IN A VEHICLE, BUT MOBILE PHONES ARE NOT.

Actually, the police aren't allowed to use hand held phones or radios when driving - there are hands free kits built into the cars and it's a disciplinary offence not to use them.

Police and members of public are exempt when using handheld equipment to make or answer emergency calls.
Seeing as police radios are attached to the upper body and don't require eyes to be taken off the road to use it, I fail to see what your point is.
