Wear whatever you like, my mother got married in a frosty mauve (very popular in the late 70's.) When I get married I'll be decked out in scarlet and gold, like an Indian bride - its so beautiful and vibrant, like me! My best friend had a chocolate detailing done because that was the colour of the bridesmaid's dresses and the flower girl's sash. White only because popular because a Queen (Victoria I'm pretty sure) did it, before that, brides celebrated in a rainbow of colours.... Throw in whatever you want. If the fact that you the center of attention doesn't give away that you're the bride, then your guests are dumb.

Not everyone looks good in white, even the most traditional of brides. Splash in some colour, use many "off white" shades. Do what makes YOU look best!

I'm going to wear a white dress or black I haven't decided.
And all my brides maids will be in a deep midnight type purple.

I think pretty much anything can go in weddings today.
My mom wore a really dressy white pants suit to her wedding.

Just find a color and see how it looks. I think there are lots of styles and a little color won't look like a prom dress.

there are some goregous dresses that are all color and can still look bridal, or you could do a white dress with colored embroidery. Tell your friend to shove it. It is YOUR wedding day. If you want to wear a purple bikini, you should be able to. Remember, this is your day. You want to feel like the most beautiful woman in the world, so wear what makes you happy and confident.

There are some very pretty gowns out there with color in them that look nothing like a prom dress, but you should keep in mind that this is your day, not your friends. Gowns with color in them and gowns that don't have any white in them at all are the trend these days anyway. You do what makes you happy. My husband and I were married in June and I chose my gown and didn't care what anyone else thought, I felt beautiful on our day, and I have no regrets. Remember, it's good to be gutsie. Congrats on your engagement.

You can purchase some beautiful wedding gowns with a white or ivory bust and then have the skirt or tule with a hint or very light color of pink or blue. The most beautiful dress I ever saw at a wedding was a shimmering medium wine color with a white chantilly lace overlay... wish I could send you a picture but I dont have one avail. Keep looking. You'll find it.

There are some beautiful wedding dresses that have a splash of color. Keep it bridal and elegant and won't look prom-ish.

PS -
White became the color of choice for weddings because Queen Victoria wore it. It was later described as being an appropriate color because of the implication of purity - but a dress is white for a wedding because traditionally wedding dresses are white. Not because of any message about someone's purity. And wearing a color will not announce to the world loose morals - it will announce your sense of style!

It's your wedding, do what you want. Ideally, you'll only get to have "your big day" once so follow your vision and don't worry about what others think.

My sister's both went with white/ivory/cream family of dresses though one had bead work that included pink crystals that were nice. Another option is to go with a classic white dress for the ceremony and change into something else for the reception (more expensive though).

i recently got married and i realized that through the planning process your tastes and what you think would be cool and what you would actually want for your wedding sometimes change.
if you want color, maybe you should try a dress that is white or ivory that has a sash or some embellishment that has the color you love--then have the bridesmaids wear that color--they're there to support you--and if you really want them to wear hot pink to the wedding because it is your favorite, then they will out of love for you. wearing the white/ivory dress (i think) really is important and symbolic and really creates the center of attention that every little girl dreams of on her wedding day.
