By some one other than yourself or by some sort of accident.

When I was in my early 20's I fired an employee for stealing and he stuck a switchblade in my knee. 12 stitches later I went back to work. Each experience is different,as well as the emotional healing process. Don't let people tell you to " get over it" or my personal favorite" get closure", let yourself feel your emotions and then replace anger and fear with pity for the fool who did this to you. Anger and fear can eat you alive, don't let anyone rob you of your existence by their random act of violence.

I've done martial arts for many years but when i was learning to use my katana, i made a mistake and my instructor stuck his sword 3&1/2 inches into my left shoulder.
I got alot of stitches and the scars are still there physically and in a small way mentally aswell but all things can be gotten over with in time

No, but a friend of mine was, and it wasn't very pleasant.
Wrong place ,wrong time, some silly little boy out to impress his equally silly little friends and decided that my mate fitted the bill perfectly.
What started out as a quiet night out ended up with him laying face down in the gutter with blood pouring out of a huge wound, luckily he didn't die and make a slow but full recovery.
As for the mental and physical side of things, he has a huge scar on his stomach which is a constant reminder of just how close he came to meeting his maker, and mentally it's made him very wary of groups of young lads, but he wont let wont happened to him going about his business.
Carrying a knife is not big and it's not clever and i believe if you live by the knife you die by the knife

I was held at knife point by two men, they both held knives to my throat to steal my car. It has left me seriously dubious of people.
My friend was stabbed in the back by a colleague and although the wound healed - the mental scars won't go. As a consequence his life is severely ruined.

One (I have many) of my fears is getting knifed - apart from the horrific physical injury I would imagine the mental scars would take a lot longer to heal. I mean really, someone is basically trying to kill or seriously injure you - that is their clear intention. How do you cope with that? Thankfully it has never happened.

Thankfully I haven't, but as a nurse I have seen several who have been. Physically the heal well but often the emotional scars are bad. Nightmares and anxiety are very common.
