I have horrid back pain that's lasted for a solid couple of days now; it's in the middle of my spine and the surrounding area. My office chair is also seeming to aggravate it, unfortunately. As a result, I'm tired, I have a headache, and I'm super cranky. I did lots of heavy lifting last weekend, so I'm positive that's what causing it. Is there anything I can do to remedy my problem, or should I consult a chiropractor?

cHIROPRATIC IS A MAINTANENCE PROGRAM SO EXPECT TO HAVE TO GO BACK FOR MANY FOLLOW-UPS. TRY A HOT BATH WITH EPSON SALTS FOR A DAY OR TWO AND TAKE SOME MOTRIN.

Well I don't know why the people above me are YELLING but here is my answer.

When should you consult a chiropractor (DC)? Before you have a problem is the best time. But if you are in pain then go and have it checked out. A good evaluation and maybe some X-rays won't hurt you BUT it could help figure out the cause of your pain. And once you know why you are hurting then you can do something about it. If you did heavy lifting recently and then a small bend forward started then pain then my guess is that you have a disc problem. So do yourself a favor and go see a DC now before it gets worse.

Improving your bodily function work your way up (slowly to avoid bloating and cramping) to 40-50 grams per day of dietary fiber.

Chiropractors are quite good.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.
