Ladies w/braids, locks or twists can't brush their hair, right? I'm caucasian and from time to time it feels good on my scalp to brush my hair thoroughly. It's invigorating. A friend of mine has long locks which she's had for years & years...she gets them twisted up from time to time to lock in the new growth. Her hair looks great...but does that mean she hasn't been able to brush or comb her hair for 10+ years? It just strikes me as odd. Caucasions constantly brush their hair to groom it.

No brushing. We often massage our scalps to initiate our oils down the hair shaft. In order to maintain dreads you cannot brush them.

Hair maintance for African Americans are very different from Causasians. Caucasians may wash their hair everyday, but Blacks whose hair is naturally more fragile and drier would get damaged if we had to wash it everyday.

The structure is simply different.

I do not have dreads, but I plan to get them eventually. I'm one of those that really hate combing and brushing and styling my hair. Its something that I view more as a "chore" as something that "feels good".

Anyway, HTHs

We do not keep our braids in for 10 years, every 3-4 months they must be taken down and re did. Second, we dont hardly brush our hair, they hair styles we have don't require that much brushing, over brushing your hair causes the hair to stretch and then break off.

limit the amount of time your hair is braided and allow it to breath for at least a week between the braids. You should see a professional to start out with a good hair care regimine, at least for 2 months, twice a month. And then you can cut back to once every two months to have your ends trimmed. So at home remedies are: try a good moisturizing shampoo a good deep conditioner or leave in conditioner hot oil treatments and keep your scalp oiled, at least every other night nightly scalp massages also help

why don't you ask your friend that question. she could better answer your question than anyone else. it is her head of hair you're referring to.
