I have a 5 month old Chug - Chihuahua/Pug. My family has another dog and they feed her scrap from the table. I do not want my puppy to eat anything but puppy food but so far she is eating anything she can find that is edible in the yard. She sleeps indoors but I take her out to do her business and for socialization. She runs freely in the yard. How can I get her to not eat scraps left by the family for the other dog and which the other dog does not eat? I do not want to have to tie her when outside. Thanks for all replies.

You can also start working on teaching her to sit, lay down and stay. Then when you are eating with the family at meals you can put her in a down/stay next to your chair and not have to worry about her running over to eat any scraps. Usually it's easier to teach your dog not to do something then it is to teach people... Your family is a good example of that.

In the yard you just have to spend some time out there with her and everytime she goes to eat something tell her "no" and redirect her attention to one of her toys. It can be done.

Good luck with that.

having the freedom to run the yard is great...however...you should be working on leash training and this will help with what you do not want the dog to eat (and also for whenever you have to go anywhere that requires the dog to be leashed).
While on leash, you can "correct" the pup when it goes near things in the yard that you do not want it to eat.
I am sorry that your other dog is fed scraps but some people just believe that it is ok to do so.

a tuff one - first, try to clean up the area where you are taking your puppy out. Then, don't let your puppy loose, keep him/her leashed and pay close attention and give the puppy a sharp "no" accompanied by a quik tug on the leash, just strong enough to let him know you mean bussiness. Teaching your dog to stop whatever it is doing when you say no is one of the most valuable commands you'll have.

A dog that small shouldn't be left unsupervised in the yard. Go out there with her and tell her "no" anytime that she gets near anything that you dno't want her to eat.

ask your family nicely if they will not put scraps out for the other dog or ask them to clean up uneaten food. it is a good idea for you to monitor what your puppy eats. btw i love chugs!!

You can't. You'll have to monitor her while she's out, or get your family to stop leaving scraps out, or walk her somewhere else.

you have to watch her, don't let her near the stuff you don't want her to eat, which will be difficult. Dogs will eat ANYTHING!
