Why do some airlines make you wait 24 hours til departure to pick your seat?

On some airlines when you buy tickets online they tell you that you can pick your seat but when it comes down to it, there is always some excuse as to why they cannot do it at that time. The outcome is that one has to log back in 24 prior to departure. Can anyone tell me why? Do you find that annoying also or is it just me?

Airlines do not no what plane they will use. They have a good idea but sometimes they need a bigger aircraft and sometimes a smaller aircraft. If they allow you to book your seat before and they change the aircraft people will not be happy. For example I am going to South Africa at the End of June with South African Airways bt I cannot book a seat because SAA could use 3 types of planes. But in March I booked a flight for my brother to go to Turkey from london with Turkish Airlines and he could book his seat as the only have one that operates that route
