"It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."

I have served in the Army for 11 years and I have been to Iraq and lost friends. There have been many times since I have been back that someone around me has voiced their opinion about the war and how we are handling it........and I have to reply while fighting back the tears "You are absolutely entitled to your opinion and if that is your stance then voice it loud and proud but please just remember that many have died to give me and you these rights and some of my dear friends were among them.

I solute your service in the war effort soldier, and it seems you have learned to talk as a true American would, respectivng the rights of others but firmly reminding the people who hate our country that they should be so lucky to be able to voice that opinion without being shot on the spot.
This is why I believe we should switch to the israeli style military where everyone who turns 18 serves a mandatory 2 years in the army. Would make this nation much more proud and much more educated as to the nature of foreign affairs.

i think it is real deep. its kinda true in a way. the men and women in uniform are the reason we have the rights we do. they are the ones who make it where we can sleep at night. they are the ones who are truly respectful to the actual meaning of the flag. they represent us. and we should respect them for that, and be more grateful.

Very interesting, people that burn the American flag should be shot.

So true!

This doesn't mean that the flag burner doesn't deserve equal consideration. We should put him in a coffin too.

I don't entirely agree with it. Yes, those freedoms are held by force. They're also taken by force. Soldiers represent both protector and aggressor.

To be more accurate:

Those willing to fight for their freedoms are the ones who keep them, not necessarily true for those who merely exercise them.
