i was wondering how safe is it to buy diamonds from pawn shops or estate jewelers? is the value worth the risk? is there a risk?

Pawn shops? Probably not worth the risk of the pawn shop either not knowing what they have, or not caring. Of course that means you might find a real treasure in a pawn shop, but the reverse is more often true.

An estate jeweler sounds more promising... They would be a company that handles jewelry sales for estates, or on commission? They might indeed be more reliable in terms of knowing their product, but of course the price might be higher as well. See if they offer return guarantees, appraisal certificates, etc. -- how do they guarantee what they're selling? I'm willing to bet they offer more security than a pawnbroker.

My ex got one from the jewelry store and got rip off. I ended up pawning it. It all depends on the honesty of the people who run that business, check them out thoroughly first.
