If you just want to open it and read it later, why not simply save the presentation?

I copied a PPT to Word because it contained a lot of drawings and the other girls in the office were not familiar with PPT.

Open a Word document.
Each page will be a slide.
Go to PPT
go to slide view
open a slide
select all
copy

go to the Word doc
Paste
at the end of the page, create a page break - either Control Enter or Insert, Break, Next Page.

Return to PPT and open another slide.
and so on.

Above pertains to PPT97.
I just noticed that if you open a PPT file, and click File, Send to, it can be sent to Word. I'm sure this can be done in later versions although the commands may differ (might say export instead of send). Check it out.

You need to use PowerPoint (or something like OpenOffice's Impress program) to open the presentation for editing. Then you can copy and paste the text (and probably the pictures, too) from the slides into Word.

You should be able to highlight and then copy paste whatever text is on the power point, it's basically a word document with slides.
