My first child was born in 1977 and nothing was ever said to me about smoking, the entire time I was pregnant and smoked. When I had my second child in 1983, I worked in the Health field and yes, I was harassed nonstop by co-workers, my doctor, and even strangers about smoking during my pregnancy, but we still weren't told much about why other than it may cause a slightly smaller baby. I still smoke now, but I now feel very bad about having done so during my pregnancies, just because of knowing much more about it now. My daughter-in-law, pregnant now, has quit smoking for the pregnancy.

No. My brother in-laws mother even breast fed when she smoked. That was in the early 70's. They just didn't get how bad it was until fairly recently. They were just beginning to tell expectant fathers not to smoke around their pregnant wives in the early 90's as far as I can remember.

I believe in the late 70's it was the standard surgeon general's warning that was on the label...something like "cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health".

Not sure but I have seen pics of my mother in the hospital bed after giving birth holding me and had an ashtray with a cigarette on the lap table! *L*

She's so embarrassed by that now. She should be!! It's just WRONG!

My mom's doctor was more concerned about her caffeine and sacrin intake than her smoking. She smoked while pregnant with me...I was born in 1978.
