okay, my 15 yr old brother got in trouble today for bringing Oregano to school in a plastic bag. I guess it was supposed to be a joke, I know it should not have been brought to school, but they are making a huge deal about it, he got suspended, and they turned the case over to juvie....can he really get in that much trouble for that?

Turning it over to juvie may be a bit much. The suspension is warranted. When I was in High School I knew people who were expelled for less.

Kids do stupid things. It is what they are supposed to do. Adults need to remember that. Temperance is an important aspect of punishment. Over reacting doesn't teach kids lessons because they will only fixate on the punishment.

That being said your brother did do something that warrants punishment. Pretending you have drugs just to goat authorities is pretty dumb.

Yes, that was one of the dumbest things he could have done in school! There is only one reason to bag oregano up and bring it to school, and that is to make people think it is something else, marijuana. He wanted to look like a criminal, now he will be treated like one.
Hopefully he learns his lesson without too much repurcussion, but I would keep an eye on him. Why would he do that anyway, it is just stupid, he may be involved in more troublesome things than you think.
RayIV's comments are completely false, do not get false hopes from them. As someone stated earlier, there are immitation drugs laws that make representing something as a drug, wether it is or not the real thing, completely illegal and punishable by law.

Yes it WAS a dumb "joke". Why in the world would anyone be bringing a plastic baggie full of "oregano" to school? Does he take home economics or work in the cafeteria? They arrest people for selling bits of soap and calling it "crack" on cops all the time.

Absolutely. I am sur he heard about it somewhere and tried to see if he could get away with it. Look-alike substances are indeed against the law. I would bet if you examine your school's hand book and rules it will probably so state that fact. He's outta luck, joke gone bad. No different then coming to school with a shoe box with wires hanging out of it and "joking' it's a bomb. This is not the day and age to be "joking"

They are definitely making a big deal out of it. Is your son a usual prankster? How are his grades? Any extra-curriculars? If he's a good kid than they will most likely take this into conisderation. If not, they are basically trying to use anything to get him in trouble. It's a pretty funny thing to do and it's OREGANO not real weed.

Thats ridiculous, oregano is not illegal, and perhaps he was going to season the crappy school lunches. Either way, they have no proof that he was acting like it was pot, and he should not be punished for that. Seriously!

Dumb, smart-*** kids get in trouble! It will depend on the students intent if more investigation needs to be done, and yes they will be monitoring you.

Yes. Most states have immitation contolled substance laws. Especially in school, where they have a heightened sense to protect the other students; and students have less Constitutional rights.

Yep. You can even go to jail for selling oregano if it's passed off as pot.

His stupid prank is not even funny how lame, you want to know why he got in so much trouble? Because he is taken time away from officers who need to catch rapists, murderers, molesters, thieves...
