There are two types of Child Molesters... the situational offender and the Pedophile...

The situational child molester is one who is not attracted to children but found themselves in a situation and made a VERY BAD CHOICE. They could be an 18-20 year old man who had sex with a 13 year old girl or a man who has healthy relationships with women his age and tried touch a child inappropriately... you know that kind of thing.

The Pedophile is someone who is ONLY attracted to children, they are NOT attracted to adults their own age. They may marry women but usually that is to only cover up their attraction or to have access to her children or his own.

The situational offender can be rehabilitated but in my opinion should never be trusted with children at all.. and they should pay for what they have done because it is very damaging to a child.

A PEDOPHILE CANNOT BE REHABILITATED!!!!
I am a Christian so I believe that God can perform miracles but these people (pedophiles) will ALWAYS be attracted to children. They should not be released to hurt others no matter how many years they "pay" for their crime.

Well, first you can't lump the term sex offender with child molester. A child molester is a type of sex offender, not the other way around. I think that some sex offenders can be reformed, but not child molesters. If a co-worker tells you that you have a nice butt. That is a form of sex offense. You were offended by that statement. He can learn not to say that again. A child molester is a whole other ball game. That person is sexually attracted too children and that can not change. With therapy nor chemical castration.

It would be like reforming you from being heterosexual. They would have to first admit there is something wrong with it, and they probably would not, except on a superficial level to stay out of trouble.

It's POSSIBLE that they might be able to refrain from their activity just like normal people do everyday- think about it, men have strong sexual urges towards women that we control every day. We men see women on the train, in the office that we leave alone, because we like being free in society. Child molesters MIGHT be able to do that to, but they don't see it as something to reform.

I do not think they can change I was watching some show and this guy was saying he was a reformed child molester, well they had a detective you know that investigates these kind's of cases and she told him he wasn't reformed that they just haven't caught him yet, so I'm with her these people need to get off the streets.

A few years ago I had a friends sister (who is a mental therapist, with about 10 years of college education and more degrees than i could imagine) explain that it's similar to someone that is hetrosexual or homosexual. If you are straight you are attracted to a person of the opposite sex. If you are gay you are attracted to someone of the same sex. As for molesters they are attracted to someone that is young, usually before they reach puberty. You can't change who you are attracted to. So NO they cannot ever change. Even if they never act upon that kind of situation again, they will always desire it, think about it, or want it.

I think, and I might be very wrong here, that the desire to 'do it' with children is something that is permanent. If you are attracted to kids, that is the way it is - no amount of reform can change that.

What can be done is to ensure that the offender understands it is very wrong and teach him (or her) to resist such attactions.

There will always be a risk I guess, as with all temptations.

Child molesters -can- be reformed. Not all of them, but some. A guy I know did time for child molestation. He's got one more year of probation. He generally just stays away from girls under 18 (if he's in a public place like an amusement park or restaurant, it's all right for him, because he would never think of doing something like that in public; he knows it's wrong). If one comes to his door, his girlfriend answers it instead (like a girl scout, and he'll order cookies, but not talk to her or answer the door). This is a requirement of his probation, but he says he'll continue with this even after.

While the feelings will never go away for him, he thinks...he knows it's wrong and he avoids and/or ignores them. I say that's reform.

IMHO a sex offender can never be rehabilitated. Sex is like an addiction, they can't stop because of the "high" they get. A child molester is the lowest of the low and deserves to be castrated and imprisoned for life.

No they cant be reformed, its been proven by Chris Hansen to catch a predator, and every state should have Jessicas law so these people can spend time with inmates that hate child molesters.

I dont' believe they can be reformed. They can be taught to try to go against thier impulses, but I believe there's always a very good chance they will give into them at least once more.
