If not, why was he crucified?

Actually he did not break any laws. Pilate said he could find no fault in Him but the crowd insisted on crucifixion. The Bible even says he was blameless and without sin. That's why He was the perfect sacrifice.
He did not sin, but became sin, to wash away our sins.
He was sacrficied for our sins.
And yes, there are those that hate God and hate His Son Jesus.
The Message of the cross has many enemies. But that is not why Jesus was crucified.

All His enemies are those who reject Him. And of course the devil and his demons. The false prophets and anti christs--anyone who is against God. This is what Jesus says to the unbelievers:
John 8:42
[ The Children of the Devil ] Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me.

John 8:44
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

He was crucified because he was a Jew and he broke Jewish laws that were punishable by death.
