There really is no way to say something like that without the risk of sounding mean. You could say it in the nicest way possible, but he could take it the wrong way.
The best thing you can do is simply tell him how you feel. Tell him how you think of him, and say that you wouldn't want to jeopardize the friendship that you have because you respect him.
He might take it hard at first, but if he's a real friend and cares about you, he'll eventually come around.
I think everyone's had to do this once in their life. You'll be fine :)

It's not mean to say that you want to be his friend. Tell him that he's a great guy and you enjoy being with him but not in a romantic way.

Just be straight up with him. Don’t try to “powder coat” the truth. This may seem a bit awkward. Just tell him what you think and if he really wants to be your friend, he’ll deal with it. It’s not mean to say that you want to be his friend, but tell him right now you just need a friend right now, before a boyfriend. ~Alison~
