What type of material should I use? Would sheets, bedspreads, or drapes be ok cut to a particular size? How do I do it? How do I hang it? Sofas are moss green, carpet beige, wood furniture is cherry and I want it to hang over the large sofa. I want to use wines and greens. What other colors? Thank you so much!

Sounds like you know what is going on color wise, you have me thinking of the colors of fall (golds, burnt oranges, maroons). For a tapestry, I would stick with heavy fabrics. They seem to lay better and do not move around as much as a lighter fabric. I would stay away from silks and cottons. A cheap way to make one would be to buy a metal curtain rod and mount it on the wall. When you find the fabric you like, fold it over the rod on the top (just enough to attach it back to itself) and pin it. Take it off the rod and run it through the sewing machine. This will create a secure pocket for the rod to go through. Heavy fabrics are a bit easier to maintain as well (in my opinion) if you need to clean it, just pop the curtain rod off the wall and shake it outside. And you shouldn't have to iron it but once(initially only, if you have to at all). Lighter fabrics will always need to be ironed. Great idea for wall art. Good luck.

Go to a fabric store that carries upholstery fabric. This is a great place to find something, color wise that will go with your furniture.

It is usually 54 inches wide. so one yard should do what you need. You should easily be able to find the fabric that will work.

Then you just need to get wood for the frame. Then sand, stain it cherry to match your furniture. Miter the corners, put together with corner brackets. Staple the fabric onto one side of the back , pull tight to, staple the next edge. Then do the ends. Staple carefully so that you do not get wrinkles.

Determine the level you want it hung at and put two screw into the studs LEVEL. Then put hangers on the back of the frame in the correct location to hang it.

Good Luck.

Another Idea is to stitch a pocket at the top and the bottom of the fabric. Then slide a long dowel or a closet rod into the pockets. You could screw eye hooks into the ends of the top rod, attach a sturdy wire to hang it from. Then hang over the screws that were installed in the studs. You can glue gold, brass, or bronze buttons on the end of the screws to hide them.
