I want to buy a book for my cousin's 7th birthday. I have no idea what the reading level is for a kid that age. Any suggestions on what books might be good? Thanks.

The Magic Tree House series of books is great.

The Umbrella by Jan Brett is great if she likes animals.

Junie B. Jones books seem to be popular with girls around that age.

Look in the "easy reader" section for books that would probably be around her reading level.

The A to Z Mysteries and the Bailey School Kids are two more series in that age range.

Andrew Clements was mentioned above. Great author, but probably a bit difficult for that age range if you want it to be something she can read herself.

My 7 year old daughter is a "good" reader, and is very into chapter books. Good ones are the Magic Tree House series, as well as the Rotten School series (similar to the Judy Blume stuff we used to read, gross but reaaaally funny.)

If you're looking for smaller books, mine loves "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales". It's a bunch of really messed up fairy tales, with a lot of kid humor. She also loves all of the books by Laura Joffe Numeroff - you probably know these ones - they are "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie", and "If You Give a Pig a Pancake", etc.

A book is a great idea for a present! You are a great cousin!

The Beverly Cleary ones are large. Bunnicula could be superb for a solid reader of seven. i might wait a year on the Little residing house books - she might have the means to study them now, yet i think of she'd savour them extra while she's that little bit older. The Time Warp Trio books are rather exciting, as are the Magic Tree residing house books. i'm no longer loopy with regard to the Junie B Jones books - even nonetheless a lot might argue... the grammar isn't superb suited adn Junie is rather obnoxious and that's portrayed as a solid subject. Your daughter's instructor might have another innovations, or an autonomous bookseller. How interesting to have a reader interior the residing house!

Ramona books are good at that age. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, the Fudge books, and Amelia Bedelia, Junie B Jones, and the Magic Treehouse books are good at that age too. By the way, getting her a book is a great idea :)

Can't say for sure titles, but I look for the stage books for my 5 and 6 yo's. They will say stage K or stage 1 or 2 or 3. Usually the stage 1 and 2 a kid that age can read on their own and it keeps their attention. Good luck. I'm mom to 3..been there.

A wonderful book is All Creatures Great and Small. It is stories told by a country vetranarian (sp?). It is a humorous, wonderful and easy reading. This was one of the first books ever given to me and almost 30 yrs later I still love reading!!!!

Go to the children's department of your favorite book store, and have the person working there point out all the Judy Blume books in that age range, the one that comes to mind is "Superfudge!" also Beverly Cleary is a good one. These are both authors I started reading at about that age and it sparked in me a lifelong love of reading.

My kids love the story of the spider and the fly, it teaches kids not to take kind words lightly from strangers. This story is in books with old children's stories in them like Benjamen Franklin's wise sayings.
