When atoms get hot their vibration causes them to be further apart. This makes a given volume lighter because atoms have weight, even air and less can fit in the same space. The hotter it is the more they vibrate and the further they are apart,... the lighter the space becomes.

The cooler air is heavier and pushes up the hot air.
