In engineering? Lots of stuff. I'm an engineering drafter, and work at a metal fabricator, and we have a half million dollar lazer cutter as well as a plasma cutter. Its to cut shapes out of material. Also it can be used for measurement of distances, accurate placing of components and is really fun to aim at people in order to annoy them. Lazers can also be used for broadcasting of information, similarly to fiberoptics.

Anywhere you need a really precise light for measuring or whatever. Last summer I worked on rewiring an entire airport as they lengthened their runway from 6000 to 8000 feet. We did a lot of very precise digging and installing of all kinds of lights, and they were pretty much all installed to within a millimeter in all dimensions, so about the thickness of a dime. Without those lasers, we could never ever hope to be that accurate.

There are also the other ones that are used for heating things up or burning stuff, but probably the major use nowadays, is for CD's and DVD's Every one of those is read by a laser, and they are both everywhere nowadays. So every car or minivan with a CD and/or DVD player, has at least one laser in it.

All sortsa stuff. Lasers can be used to heat up very small spaces, to excite atoms, to illuminate, to target items (like those nifty laser sights you see on guns in movies).

Many uses.
A leveling device for installing cupboards, and such.
A pointer for teachers/professors/instructors when performing a lecture/demonstration.
A way to play with your dog, as long as you don't point the laser in its eyes, because that makes Baby Jesus cry.
