It is simply badge engineering. GL could mean Grande Luxury and XL could mean Executive Luxury. It was a marketing ploy by manufactures.
Some came with electric windows, leather seats, air conditioning, etc. If you are buying a car with all these features, make sure they work. A failed air con unit cost £600 to put right.

they are trim options, but every automaker has thier own.

nissan altima (base) s(nicer) sl (nicer) se(nicest)
the base comes with cloth and hubcaps and a 2.5 motor
the se is with power everything and a 3.5 motor

toyota avalon xl (base) xls (nicer)

depends on the brand, but my guess is that xl is not as nice as gl (but if you email me with an exact brand i can tell you.

check website of the dealer/manufacturer.
usually XL is extra luxury (but its really not)
GL is cheap version of anything

i own a repair shop, and the only difference is in the trim packages they have on them, usually one will have a lot more features than the other one will have, that's basically about it,all the parts from one will swap out to the other one, you,ll just see a little different interior, and more options such as cruise control or power Windows ,and maybe power seats,,that's about it,good luck i hope this help,s.
