When grabbing for the barbell are you supposed to bend your knees or keep your legs straight when doing a deadlift rep?

Those are two variations of deadlifts, traditional and stiff-legged.

Search "deadlift" on youtube. Plenty of people put up videos of them performing the exercise and you can see comments about their form.

If you can do the dead-lift the proper way, then that's not your problem. Try bending your knees resting the bar on both and rolling it to the floor as you squat lower. You definitely should avoid using your back. Now, if you are concerned with your dead-lift form, make sure you do it in a mirror where you can see your side angle to view your posture and movement. Focus on feeling the movement in your hips/buttocks area, while keeping your knees unocked/slightly bent, but muscles in your legs and abdomen should be firm. If you're still unsure, you can go to any local gym and have a personal trainer give you a free 1/2 hour session in hopes of you buying more...

You are supposed to bend your knees to activate your hamstrings. Here is a video of correct deadlift form. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0KDnaHCOQ0
