TOTAL immersion! Learn the food, learn the slang and learn the people. Work with them, live with them and eat with them--it's the only way that you'll learn what is what. Do not be embarassed to speak spanish in front of someone--it's the only way that you will get comfortable enough to speak to someone.

I took two years of spanish in school and I was the class clown. I didn't pay any attention to what was being taught because it was boring as hell. However, years later when I moved to San Antonio, I worked amongst 200-300 spanish speaking people. I learned quickly and I am still learning everyday.

I don't know the best way, but I learned it on the job. I had a year of spanish in junior high school, so I knew some of the basics of the language. I would suggest you enroll in a basic conversational spanish course at the local technical college. Most tech schools offer a continuing education type curriculum. This will teach you the differences in the mechanics of the language (i.e. conjugations of verbs, the difference between using "la" or "el" when saying "the", sentence structure, some basic conversational words to make sentences, etc...).

After that course, you should have an idea of how the language works. Then it's all in how much you put into learning and remembering translational words. I went to work for a company doing construction work. I was the only non-hispanic person that spoke any spanish on the helper crew. There was only one hispanic mechanic that spoke any english. Basically, the entire helper crew was hispanic, and the whole mechanic crew was white. I got used as a translator because, though my knowledge was limited, I did know the language better than any of the other white guys. I was not rude to the hispanic guys, and they worked with me to gain new words in spanish. I also bought an electronic spanish/english pocket translator (a small pocket-sized computer that looks like a calculator). That helped me out tremendously when it came to words I didn't know. They run about $15 at Wal Mart.

One word of caution, though... It is said that attempting to learn a new language after a certain age is more difficult. I have heard, and found it to be true myself, that after you reach a certain vocabulary size committed to memory (mine is 800 to 1000 words... more than enough to get my point across most of the time), you tend to lose the ability to recall words as well. This is not to say you cannot learn the language, but it just means that after your vocabulary reaches a certain size, older people tend to lose a word when they learn a new one. They will see it on the translator later on and say "Dangit! I knew that word. I feel stupid now!" Don't get yourself too upset if this happens. It's not the end of the world. Truth is, most hispanics will see that you are putting forth the effort to help them in learning to communicate with them, and appreciate it.

Hope this helps...

immersion in that language. have spanish people talk only in spanish, be surrounded by spanish. you'll naturally pick it up.

you also have to practice constantly, like every day, cause if you dont then you lost what you've learned.

try this website, its ok, you might find a tutor-www.phrasebase.com

I think the Rosetta Stone software sounds really promising - but it's rather pricey. Check the site.. rosettastone.com
