I have a year and a half old male cat who has recently starting urinating on 2 specific spots in my living room, he deficates in the litter box. I know that there is nothing medically wrong with him and need to know how to stop this behavior. I currently have him locked in the bathroom with his litter box as the vet reccomended. Two questions..
1. How long should I keep him locked in the bathroom??
2. Anybody have any other ideas to help stop this behavior??

BTW...I have already tried citrus scented candles, sprays, etc and they didn't keep him away. I also put foil down behind our tv to keep him away from there, which seems to work, but really don't want to put foil in the middle of my living room if i don't have to,

First...DON"T throw your cat outside but, that is a separate issue.

There are many reasons a cat may Begin to urinate outside the box. First, be sure there are NO medical reasons. I had a cat with a UTI and even after it cleared he sill didn't want to use the litter. He associated it with pain. I changed the type of litter to Cat Attract and added another box. (I have 3 cats). You must get the smell out of the carpet. Put 1/4 inch of baking soda on the soiled spots for 2 days, then vacuum. If the odor persists, email me and I will send you another option for odor removal.

The change in litter worked for me. I now 2 different litters and so does he. Being I have cats, I also scoop the litter twice a day.

Another reason a cat may be outside the box...Territorial. Are there any animal outside your home, cats or dogs? Unfortunately that is a more difficult situation to handle.

Has anything changed in the cat's life that is causing him stress?

Is the litter box one with a lid? Some cat don't like the confinement because it also confines the smell. Is the litter box big enough for him?

How has he been doing with the litter box since you put him in the room? Be sure not to leave towels or area carpet down on the floor as an alternative to the rug. Isolating the cat is one of the best because it is retraining them to use the litter box. There is no definitive answer as to the length of time. While he is in there be sure to visit him often and clean the carpet.

As for he people who don't like cats or don't want to help this person...then don't answer her question. These posts are for help...not ignorance.

First of all while he is in the bathroom get Nature's miracle, and use that to clean the spot that he is peeing.. is he neutered? If not I would get him neutered that will stop the spraying. Make sure that the litter box is extra clean.. some cats are really picky about that.. I would keep him in the bathroom for 2-3 days, try scooping his box out everyday and use the Nature's miracle so that he doesnt smell where hes peed before and do it again. I hope this was helpful!!

Did the vet do a urinalysis? The cat might have crystals or a bladder infection or UTI of some sort.

Get another litterbox so your cat has 2 to choose from. Use clumping litter. Some cats don't like it if the box is dirty.

Put your cat in the litterbox a few times a day, let it jump out if it doesn't want to go to the bathroom.

All of the male cats I have ever had have eventually peed in the house. Once they start, I found it impossible to get them to quit. They are all outside cats, now. I even had one that would pee on my side of the bed(only my side, not my husbands). I have found that spayed females make a lot better house cats than males.
My ex sister-in-law is in the animal behavior department at Purdue. Her name is Julie K. Shaw. She might have some suggestions.(although her suggestion to me was once they start, they may not ever stop)
Good luck.

My cat used to have the same problem, might not be the case for you but dom doesnt like a dirty litter box, if there is to much it it he wont use, it always looks ok to me but he not happy with, try changing his tray more often, or if he doing it in specfic places move his tray there if its convient to you. Now he justs pees in my back garden, which snt as bad i think.

My cats are doing the same thing. I want to keep them outside, and even have put them out. But my son wants them inside and keeps letting them in. But like one person said, once they start they will not stop, and they are probably doing it in more places then what you think, like your clothes or couches. I love my cats but I am just about tired of them doing this. They will stink up your house. And the smell never gets out.

Try changing the scent in that specific area like pepper so you make her scent disappear.

you should get him spayed if he's not already. be sure to get something to eliminate the odor completely, not cover it up. if not, take him to the vet, he might have a bladder infection.

BY THE WAY..... YOU NOTICE ALL THESE CAT HATERS ARE MALES????? ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
