I've seen some questions about people fearing grapplers. Are the grappler's egos so big they think everyone fears them? Do they think that if a fight goes to the ground that the other person is going to playing by some rules? I can put every one's mind to rest and say that I won't be playing by any rules if a grappler tries to take me down. What do other people say?

Honestly, if you are in a fight and are taken to the ground. Are you going to follow any rules? It doesn't take much training to put a thumb in an eye, bite an ear or nose. There aren't any rules in an all out fight. Are there?

SanSooJit - In a stand up game fighters have distance, on the ground they don't. Grabbing a body part and pulling it off might be a LITTLE easier if both people are together on the ground. Not standing with distance. You sound like a grappler. Period, enough said!

SanSooJit - Like any situation, you need to judge how much force to use. You can use the amount needed to neutralize the threat, put roughly. When weapons are involved the whole situation changes.

Bluto - If you practice an art that is pushing the boundaries of "being legal" and some one else that is trained in the art and is extremely accomplished at it, that doesn't mean that I am. That might only get some one hurt badly. That's being cocky. I know a saying that has always stuck with me. "No matter how good you are, there is always some one else better than you. And you have no idea who that is". I don't take anything for granted. Rules or no. I assume they will have the same mentallity as me.

it isnt so much the grapplers being too cocky (though I have seen this too) but that everyone who is not a grappler believes the hype. as soon as you underestimate your opponent you are an @ss.
the grappler rolls, joint locks, smiles, then gets stabbed. oh well, the rules arent present outside the tournaments. too bad man.
too many people are afraid of their shadows.
and we are afraid of the unknown. well mankind was afraid of comets too, once. but now we know about them and laugh. same for anything else in life, if you understand it, you are not afraid of it. get educated.
dont give your opponent the benefit of assuming he is going to win. sure, be wary, but dont be self defeating.

I think any long term practioner of any style is going to be very confident feeling that their "art" is superior. Most of the fear comes from the lack of understanding and preparation. Many other fighting styles don't practice too much on the ground so they are not prepared what to do. This is evident in the first few UFC's. Most of the martial artist never thought about being taken down to the ground and did not train for it so you would see a lot of matches end in submissions. However, now most fighters can do both and in a MMA match you don't see as many submissions as in the past. Even in the 60's when kicking was introduced to the general public, it was new to them and most people didn't know what to do. It all comes down to education and preparation. I have over 25years of Martials training but only dabbled in grappling and I am still not comfortable on the ground.

Hi there
The answer is no not at all. I think this whole thing again comes from such rubbish as UFC etc etc. The only thing most martial artists fear is BIG GUYS. Grappling in the real world is a useful art but only if you are a Policeman or Doorman. There's so much to fighting and ground work is only a small piece of what there is to study

they ask these questions because they know in the real world that theyv'e wasted there time and money, regardless of the fact that they get brainwashed in class.they need to hear other mainly bsjj proponents say yeah where tough and everyones scared of us.yes it's good to know how to fight on the ground but only a fool goes there unless they have no choice.it's not there ego it's there insecurity and lack of confidence in there style.we'll probably all get an abuse report now from the big tough powder puffs now for questioning or commenting on there style or abilities.
EDIT>a lot of ppl have this misconception that if you do ma you have rules.well there are no rules and a ma knows a lot more of the no rules stuff and will use it a lot quicker.

Grapplers seem to have big egos. Some of them have earned the right, but some are just being pompous due to the popularity of MMA on TV. I have NEVER played by ANY rules in a street fight. Never will. A lot of people seem to think that traditional martial arts practitioners need to learn to defend themselves. I could do that before. Now I can fight legally, in a controlled environment, in ways I couldn't before. And the things I have learned in TKD have only put me in a position to hit harder, faster, and with a little more confidence. Can I destroy any grappler I meet on the street? No. Can I prevent him from having any more kids? Absolutely. If that's what I have to do to be able to walk away, so be it. My school teaches basic Hap Ki Do, and one instructor is a grappling fool. So do I fear grapplers? No. Do I respect real grapplers? Yes. Do I respect or fear the guys who watch 34 consecutive hours of MMA, see how to tackle somebody, take two weeks of BJJ and think they can beat my ***? Not a chance in hell.
I am not Billy Bad ***. I am cautious, but I am by no means afraid of anyone. Being afraid is the first step towards failure.
Tirade over. Thanks.

In stand up fighting, as we all have learnt a good game wins.
In ground fighting, the same goes.
In stand up we can all bite etc as well, with no avail to an experienced stand up fighter. They will evade and nail you, or at least I will try like hell.
Same on the ground.
Don't Fear Grapplers, understand them.
They are in a GREAT combat art, and will toast you on the ground if you have no game of your own.
I might add " Great Reply Wall " .
I also will add, to say you have a knife or need a weapon to win a fight shows lack of confidence in yourself. You need to learn about Martial Arts laws and fiction. A knife weilding opponent can get 25 years to life.
A street fight can get you 90 days, quite a difference. What form of self defense is good if in it you go to prison?
The law is simple, only enough till it ends regardless of any situation. For some guy taking you down to win a street fight, well you must suck if you need to pull a knife. That is the real fear to avoid, lack of self confidence. Never think you have to kill or maim to win a fight, fight to win, intelligently. Maiming and killing is a last resort to skilled fighters. Focus on ability to win in a fair setting as well as anything goes, or else when your highschool friend takes you down from a great submission he is learning, well maim him, ok....
And last I Love Grappling, Kick Boxing, and Holistic medicine.
Should be part of high school mandatory classes. We would have alot more respect in the world , thats for sure.

Grapplers are cocky for a reason. Like the Wall said, we pull you into our world. Then you're ours. Lotsa people think grappling is inferior to punching or kicking cause it isn't as dramatic. Maybe we're trying to make up for that with the *********.

without responding to the specific question, I can give you a specific "non-stylistic" answer.
what is your art?
If your art was a dominant art for a time in a "as close to real as the law will allow" then wouldn't you brag?
if you had videos and backup of top pro fighters of other styles losing to your art, wouldnt' you get cocky or feel proud?
as to your specific comments regarding grappling:

scroll down to #3- simply put- neither will they.
why do you assume that a boxer, mt fighter, judoka, bjj fighter, or any other sport fighter will automatically follow the rules when there are none?

Grapplers can be pretty cocky. Look at the Renzo Gracie and Frank Shamrock fight. Gracie got his *** beat. That was hilarious.
