I'd like to go back to college - but dag gone college is expensive! How on earth can you afford to go back to college as an adult w/out going into debt with student loans? I've tried to find scholarships but it's hard. And the FAFSA does nothing for me - they don't consider me "poor enough" to get any help. And heck I could probably pay for college if I had no other expenses FAFSA! Anyway, are there any people here who have gone back to college as an adult? How did you do it financially?

How did you do it financially?

You do it one or two courses at a time - paid for through earnings from a job at a state school

As an adult, take out the student loans and go to college with a specific career objective in mind. The career objective should be one that will pay you substantially more than you make now. Then you will easily be able to pay off the student loan. Otherwise, don't go back.

I've often wondered that myself. Without dipping into your own savings account, I really don't think there's any other way And you're right...FAFSA only helps if you make minimum wage. One thing you could do is check with your employer to see if they offer tuition reimbursement. Some employers will help you pay for college if you're taking classes that pertain to your current line of work, or upgrading to a higher position within the company.

1) If possible, try establishing residency in a state that subsidizes education.

2) Since you're an older student, nobody's going to say 'so young and talented', so just take your time getting back into college. Start at community college taking one or two classes, and constantly shmooze in the transfer center to learn about all the options you have.

3) If you're using your own money, consider the University of South Africa (a distance University). Its CHEA accredited but cheap.

Well, I did student loans. But I suppose you could work full-time and go to school part-time, so you only had to pay for a few credits at once.

Depending on what kind of degree you are getting, and what kind of job you can get after school, the debt might be worth it.

Go to a state school (I go to the University of Oklahoma) and I pay about 1200 a semester for 3 classes.
