Pretty often. Whey protein digests extremely fast if taken by itself. You can mix it with casein if you wish to get a sustained release of protein into the bloodstream. The best times to have whey protein by itself is first thing in the morning and after a workout. During the rest of the day you should be drinking a more sustained blended protein (whey, milk, egg).

It really depends on how your diet is and what your weight is. You do not want to take in protein in excess because it will be converted to fat. If you lift weights and exercise regularly take in .6-.8 g of protein per lb of bodyweight. If you are inactive take in .5-.6 g per bodyweight. I would drink a shake in the morning with breakfast, one after you workout, and one mixed with milk before you go to bed. The rest of your protein intake should come from food.

That really depends on why you're taking it.
