I have an appointment with the amercian embassy 16th April to apply for a visa due to having a criminal record 3years ago for assulting a police officer. They said they cannot tell me until I have the interview if I will be granted with one. The problem is I go away 3rd May to florida, does anyone know if I will get one and in time??

If it was only one offence you may be OK.
If the crime involved "moral turpitude" you will be refused a visa. This link will give a good guide to what they consider are crimes that will exclude you from visa eligibility http://foia.state.gov/masterdocs/09fam/0940021aN.pdf
Make sure you take copies of your court records with you, everything official you can find to document exactly what happened. If alcohol was involved in any way it may help your case to regretfully tell the consular officer that you decided to give up drinking after your arrest. (Well that seemed to help in my case)
It is never a good idea to book a ticket before being issued with a visa.

When I applied for my Fiance visa through the US Embassy in London I had the interview and within a week I had my passport returned with the visa glued in the middle. They will return the passport by courier service so there is no delay in returning the passport but I couldn't say how long they take to make their decision. I was told there and then that I had been approved but being a Police Officer at the time with a squeeky clean record probably helped a lot!

You are going to have an answer one way or the other on the day you visit the Embassy. The result of this interview is not appealable. You have a few minutes to convince the Consular Officer that you are worthy of being allowed into the USA. Get yourself in a confident frame of mind. Do not just tell them what you think they want to hear. They are far too well-trained for that.

The day of the interview ( April, 16th), the officer would let you know if you get the visa or not.

Its suprising what these people in the Embassy can get up on there computer about you...I doubt it very much that you will get one...You have seconds to convince these people you are worthy of this visa...They aint easy to please...believe me.. Once they stamp you passport declined(if you dont get it)you will always be questioned why this is in your passport...I live in America now...wasnt easy tho....

they do no longer seem to be accepting purposes now. The DV Lottery for 2012 is now closed. they might reopen lower back for a short quantity of time in Oct/Nov to settle for purposes for the 2013 lottery. they are going to concern utility varieties alongside with submission techniques for the 2013 DV Lottery, if there is yet another lottery, in simple terms previously the utility era opens. With the recent foul-up, assume varieties & techniques will substitute.
