Do you have to name him immediately after he's born? No, but, depending on your state laws (assuming you're in the US) you may not be able to leave the hospital before you complete the birth certificate which requires the baby to be named. Keep in mind some insurance companies will toss you out of the hospital (or at least refuse to pay, pretty much the same thing) the same day you give birth.
Call the hospital maternity ward that you plan on delivering at, ask for the person that handles birth certificates and they call tell you what the requirements are. As far as how long you'll stay, contact your insurance company and ask how long they allow for an uncomplicated delivery. Use that as your base time.
Good luck.

Most hospitals will let you wait a few days before you name your son, but the only problem is you won't be able to leave the hospital. I would make a list of names and after having your son, wait a few hours to become coherent again, and see which name fits him the best. Don't feel rushed and make a hasty decision! Just feel out some names and see where it goes from there.

my wife says that you just need a name before you leave the hospital. You have 39 days...we looked online and in books for names. If you can;t do it in 39 days what makes you think you will do it in the 3 days at the hospital. Go with the name Rob...it has a nice ring to it...lol Actually we did us the middle name of our son for someone dear in our lives that passed away. It it neat for us and a blessing to his widow. Just a thought. I would name another son Martin Luther or something historically significant. peace

You do not have to name your baby until you are ready. People will give a hard time because they say there are some pyschological effects to letting a baby go too long with out a name, but I do not personally know of any info on that. Good luck and I am sure you will figure out before you know it.

I think you have like up to 2 weeks before the birth certificate is filed. That's how it worked for me when using a midwife.
Go to http://www.yourchildrennaturally.com and look under the "Favorite Names" article for some neat names - no Ethans or Gavins

Yes, you have to name your child in the hospital before you can take baby home - they and you have to file government paperwork that require a name.

Ask how long you have to name him when your at the hospital. My mother put off naming my sister and was almost thrown in jail for it. Be safe and ask how long you have, because there is government paperwork that needs to be filled out.
