I'm making synthetic dread falls for my hair, and I'm trying to make them less skinny and with more volume. In order to do this you have to backcomb... but what exactly is that? Like flipping your head over and combing through? How can I do this with synthetic hair that is lying on an ironing board?? thanks!

Take a section of hair and instead of combing it down from root to end, you comb rapidly in short strokes from ends to root. This tangles up the strands together the more you do it.

Back combing, to my knowledge, is when you hold some of your hair straight up and take a comb and comb downwards towards your head. It makes your hair kinds clump at the base of your head, producing lift.

Why do you need to backcomb the synthetic hair - what are you trying to achieve?

Back combing is the 'new' word for tease. Lay the hair flat on the board. Hold it at the top and then, starting at the top and going down, use a wide tooth comb to comb the hair backwards (or tease) until you get the desired fullness. To get a finished look, you take your comb and very gently comb the top layer over the 'teased' area to smooth it.

what are you backcombing for? a hairstyle or just to get volume? if its for volume only, its not going to work because the weight of your hair will cause it to fall, not withstanding the backcombing... if you are doing it for a particular style, use a brush and an aerosol hairspray, but don't make it too wet. and even if you are doing it for a hairstyle, it will last better as a up-do. simply use something with a heavy oil base and the teased hair will begin to become untangled on its own...oil only does what its supposed to do when used on black hair!!! Trust me!!

Backcombing you hair, is where instead of burshing you hair downwards, brush the oposite way and the hair should buildup and add volume; however it can become increadbly knotty.

Could you not attact the end(root) of the hair on one end of the ironing board and then holding the other end down comb up towards the root.

Yes, your correct. It means combing against the natural way the hair grows or lies. So, comb or heat it in the opposite direction from the natural way it will fall when you are done.
