OK, when I was growing up, there was this guy called John "3:16" Cook, he ran a homeless shelter, and always had signs up around town saying "John 3:16--Soup, soap and hope".

Hmm ... I've never actually heard about the 'soup, soap, and hope' that you've quoted, but I do know what John 3:16 says ... For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son ...
Soup is 'food', soap makes things 'clean', and 'hope' is what all Christians have about 'getting to heaven' ... the 'soup' is the 'food for the soul' as well as food for our bodies, the 'soap' is both having a 'clean body' and having a 'cleansed soul' ... and I am going to remember that 'soup, soap, and hope' because it's a beautiful thing to go along with John 3:16. Thank you.

Sounds like the Salvation Army, which does a lot of good in the world for people who need basic help. John 3:16 was the man's motivation. The 3 S's were the results, what he was offering.

Apparently John Cook was/is a Christian who believes (as it says in the book of James) that those who believe have to "...put their money where their mouth is..." when it comes to helping the less fortunate. They need the "soup, soap, and hope" (and other stuff) for survival.
His only problem is that more of us don't follow suit...

one could say that the "soup" part of this analogy is that it feeds and nourishes the body. The "soap" cleans the body but the hope part is something that goes deeper, to the spirit of a man.
"For GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS only begotten SON that whosoever believeth in HIM shall have life everlasting."
This Great gift from GOD feeds, cleans and is the only real hope for man kind. Good question. This would definitely preach!
