I live in the midwest, husband's a narcotics investigator, smallish town, lots of new gang activity...2 quest?

I'm just curious, maybe some of you big city cops could explain.

1. MS13 = how huge is this gang? we just had a brutal murder here and he was working at a meat plant under an assumed name. what's the deal? what's their M.O.?

2. husband got a packet from some agency w/ info on different gangs that said that in most larger cities, if you have lots of asian run nail places and buffets, you already have an asian gang problem. is this true? i find it hard to swallow.

any info you have would be interesting to me.. thanks.

I AM NOT A COP BUT I AM IN THE LEGAL BUSINESS AND LET ME TELL YOU MS 13 IS HUGE THEY ARE VERY VIOLENT AND ARE SPREAD WORLD WIDE; TRY TO CATCH THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SPECIAL ON IT. IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE IT HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

Mara Salvatrucha is a large gang involved in criminal activities throughout Central and North America. The gang's name is commonly abbreviated as MS-13, Mara, MS, and is composed of mostly Mexicans, Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans. The MS-13 gang has cliques, or factions, located throughout United States, El Salvador, and parts of Central America although MS-13 now has members now in Australia they take the name MS-33 the 33 believed to be taken from the original number of founding members of MS in Australia.

Membership is believed to total over 50,000 worldwide.[1] MS-13 criminal activities include drug smuggling and sales, black market gun sales, human trafficking, assassinations for hire, theft, and assaults on law enforcement officials.[2] Their activities have caught the eye of the FBI, who in September 2005 initiated wide-scale raids against suspected gang members, netting 650 arrests across the country.[3]

THE SAME WITH THE ASIAN GANGS. THEY ARE JUST A TIGHTER KNIT AND VERY HARD TO INFILTRATE DUE TO THE LANGUAGE BARRIER. CHANCES ARE THAT IF THE COMMUNITY IS INUNDATED WITH NAIL SALONS AND BUFFETS THEY HAVE DUG INTO THE COMMUNITY. THESE ARE LARGELY MONEY LAUNDERING OPERATIONS FOR THEIR ILLEGAL ENDEAVORS

Oh, to live in a small town and be blissfully ignorant. Here in California we have had gangs for 100 years or more. You cannot find a nail salon anywhere with white girls working there, there are none, they are all asian. I believe that what he heard is true. And all gangs, not just MS13, sell dope, control territory, run off the competition, deal in black market guns, will jump youngsters in to their gangs. I work in a middle school and we have hard core gang bangers, kids who are identified by the police as having gang ties through their families, father, brother, uncle, etc. I have seen 6th graders with their gang tattoo on their chest. We have the Mexican Mafia. They often have ties in the police dept and influence with them. They are nothing to mess around with.

MS13...bad, bad, bad. South American...can't recall if they're Peruivian, Ecuadorian, etc. But at least back in their country their ruthless and here...well for the most part real gangs..whether Russian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish..etc make it a point to avoid killing cops. Too much heat...too much publicity. They prefer killing their own or business associates who screw them over or are a bother.

Now..the Asian nail and buffet question. That's the most ridicolous thing I've ever heard. Two casinos here out my way. Asians galore employed there. Tons of massage, nail, buffet, food stores run by Chinese here. They're no problem. Probably one of the more quieter groups I've ever run across. Does that mean that some are up to no good? Hey...people are people. Every race and nation has it's criminals. Asians tend to prey on their own like the old Italian Black Hand in the 10's and 20's. Loansharking, moneylending, servitude...it exists. But whatever agency put that out (or in that context) should re-evaluate that statement. Its like saying once a black family moves into the neighborhood property values go down. Absolutely asinine.

MS13 is considered by many the most dangerous gang out there today MO lots of gore and very blantant.
Of course they would have been just as likely to walk into the plant and kill several people to get to him. No regard for thierself or others at all.

many of the asian nail or buffets are know well to use illegal labor, but that is about it, most of the gangs have little use for legal business ifit can not help them at all in their drug and prostitution work.
