When I bought a smaller car I had to buy a new carrier because the old one wouldn't fit! So buy one big enough for the pet to be comfortable, but one that's easy to carry and fits nicely in your car.
I always put something soft in the carrier like a towel or small blanket anyway. Good luck.

unless you're going on a plane or have another reason for a soft carrier, they are usually MUCH happier in a hard carrier. Would you rather hang out in a solid room or a tent. Also for heavier animals, like your cat, the sides can come inwards a bit when carrying the soft carrier. Though you could try to "soft" carrier that are leather with a metal frame, they are PRICEY though. They do keep the shape VERY well. Also, hards usually have more room, and you can put a small/thin pillow in there for them for a long travel.

Hard plastic carriers like "Pet Taxi" with the locakble doors is the best cat carrier in my opinion. These keep the cat securely inside. Get one that is large enough for your cat to stand up in and lay down in comfortably. You can always make it "softer" inside by laying a folded towel or bed sheet or blanket on the flooring of the carrier. That's what I do with my kitty's carrier.

I have a dog, but the same still applies. I prefer the tough plastic ones. I drive a lot with my dog. He is a Chihuahua, so if I don't cage him he wants on my lap and it is not safe, he can crawl under my seat to and end up the petals. I like to keep in him a big sturdy cage. I put blankets and water and everything else in there for him. I always think if we wreck or anything he will be safe in that cage. They are really easy to carry around too! I would recommend the plastic ones. You can make them comfy inside.

I bought a great pet carrier years ago from a pet supply store. It is the size of a 19" t.v. set (fiberboard) but the front door is made out of wire so my cats can see out. I put the carrier on the front seat of my car with the front facing me so they can see me. They aren't thrilled riding in the car but they tolerate it if I have to bring them to the vet, which isn't often, thank goodness.

Go for a soft one. I tried both and the hard one scared my cat even with a blanket; she tried to scratch the door and her paws would get red. She felt much more confy in the soft one, still somewhat scared, but I guess she felt safer. I persuaded her to get inside by putting a little catnip inside.

I always get the soft ones, I like them more and they are softer for the cat. However, the plastic ones can get washed easier, and you could get one and put a cushion inside. It's up to you really, both work.

I got the hard ones, I feel that they are safer in those than the soft ones.

get a hard one because they are less prone to breaking. if you are concerned about the comfort of your cat, then you can put a nice soft towel or blanket inside it.
BEST OF LUCK :-)
