I have a small hole, maybe the size of a nickle in the front of my carburetor on my 66 Bug. It looks like there should be something covering it, but nothing is there. When the engine is running and I push on the gas I can see a stream of gas going through the carburetor. What can I do to cover this, or does it need to be covered at all?

The engine is a newly rebuilt 1600cc. Any help is appreciated.

I do have an air filter, this hole is on the front of the carburetor, facing the back of the car. Not on the top where the air filter is.

It sounds like your carburetor rebuild has lost a "PLUG". Yes there should be a metalic plug in that nickle sized hole. How does the engine run with a bigger air intake? Do you see any gasoline leaking out of this hole at any time? Contact J.C. Whitney at TEL: (800) 529-4486 or on line: for a catalog of VW parts and accessories. Or contact your nearest VW parts dealer.

I had that same thing happen to my 63 beetle when i first bought it off of a friend of mine. While giving it a carb rebuild and a tune up that small plug in the front of the carb just jarred loose. Take some sand paper so you can clean and rough up the surface on that plug as well as where it fits inside that bore as best as you can. Take some JB weld and re-glue it back into place. On some of the earlier model pre-67 beetles that came with the 30 and 32 PICT carbs do that sometimes. All else fails in finding that plug just take a dime and grind it down to size and glue it. Good luck.

Yes that hole needs a plug in it. Some VW's came with a carberator that had a funky type of smog device that utilized that hole. It was vacuum operated. The casting on the card was made to have or not have that device.

There is no glass window there? It is an odd one to be sure. Bet you can't find another. And the car year has nothing to do with the engine. That engine is out of a newer(70+) so take a look at another bug and compare. Or the rebuild shop should know that.

Don't you have an air filter over your carburetor? Thats where the fuel and air is getting mixed. If you get any debris in there, it could be a potentially bad thing for your motor.
