See the Highway Code for laws affecting pedestrians.

Basically:

Use footpaths wherever possible. If no footpath, walk facing oncoming traffic.

Cross the road at zebras and pelicans where possible. Do not cross on the zig-zag marks at the approach to crossings. Do not stop or dawdle on any crossing.

At other places be especially careful, watch for oncoming traffic, cross only when road is clear.

Obey the red lights at level crossings. Do not try to dodge the barriers.

Obey the instructions of police officers.

Do not walk on motorways or other roads where pedestrians are not allowed. Do not walk in between tram lines.

At night keep to well-lit areas where possible. Wear something light-coloured and/or reflective at night when walking in areas with no street lighting.
