If you are in perth at any stage try grape picking or pruning, i know someone who hires backpackers for that, also know a hotel owner if you are into bar or hotel work so if you need an email addy let me k now ok

There is a national shortage of skilled labour in this country. I'm not too sure about the pay though, I guess each industry has their own award rate. The website below gives a link to a list of occupations which have staff shortages. If you look for types of jobs on that list, I reckon you won't have any trouble finding work. When Irish Eyes are smiling, you will get work anywhere, if work is available, there is always a demand for fruit pickers.
But a lot depends on you, how old are you, do you have a work visa, do you have skills that are needed here, how long do you want to stay in one place.
Pay depends on what you do, fruit picking doesent pay much but its cash in hand.

From what I heard from people who have backpacked there, it is fairly easy to get temp work. I dont think you can be to picky about what you get though.
