Root canals in and of themselves are not painful. I had two done, I broke my two front teeth when I was 12 or so. The worst of it is the shot you receive to numb your mouth, and your mouth muscles being sore from holding your mouth open. Theoretically, if your root was entirely dead in the tooth, a root canal could be performed without novicain, but no dentist is going to do this to you.
Take a deep breath, relax. If you psyche yourself out that it's going to hurt, you're going to percieve more pain than you're really going through. If you go in with the attitude that hey, this dentist is going to do a great job, I'm not going to feel a thing, then you won't percieve as much pain.
Recovery time is minimal. I waited an hour before returning to school after mine were done. Take a day off if you want to, but you don't need more than a day.

I have had at least 10 root canals in the last 30 years, and have never had to take a day of rest afterwards. After a root canal the tooth is now dead. It has no nerves or blood vessels.

Depends on the dentist as to whether it will hurt or not but a root canal is the removal of the nerve in the tooth. usually Tylenol is all that you should need. You should ask you dentist for a prescription of percocet or Tylenol with codeine just to be on the safe side. Two days should be enough time to resume normal activity, though most people don't need that long.
Also remember with the nerve removed from that tooth there will be no more blood supply there, your dentist probably said you may need a crown put in. Until you get the crown Avoid eating hard candy and crunchy food because the tooth is weaker and easier to break.
good luck

okay - I had a root canal this summer and I was terrified! But I was actually really surprised. It doesn't really hurt that much at all, because they deaden the nerve, so it doesn't hurt very much. The beginning part will hurt somewhat, but just until they deadedn the nerve and after its all over you'll be fine. I went to work the next day.
If you have trouble relaxing at the dentists, ask them for Nitro. It will call you down. I had that too and it help. Don't worry about it. its really not as bad as it sounds. Good Luck!

I had two root canals. No, it won't hurt... the dentist will make very sure of that. Your face will be numb for a few hours, but just do relaxing things when you get home. . Your dentist will also give you a prescription for pain, but I never needed it. Try not to worry; I know that is normal. I worried, too, but it will be okay.

It's different for everyone. How is your pain tolerance? I've had 3 done over the years. At my dentist it takes 2 trips to get it all done. Some places do it in 1 trip. They really don't hurt it's just hard to keep your mouth open that long. I went back to work the same day after my last one.
Good luck, it'll be ok.

As long as the root is not infected the only pain you'll feel is the initail shot to numb you. If there is an infection, your tooth will not numb-up easily. Normally, they will prescribe antibiotics 10 days prior to the procedure. YOu probably will be fine and able to work, go to school, whatever the next day.

There is no rest needed after a root canal procedure. Most of my patients get a root canal done early morning on their way to office or while returning back so they sleep it off and are roaring to get back to office the next day, much relieved of their dental pain. Here's more for reading though: http://the-speaking-tooth.blogspot.in/2014/08/is-root-canal-treatment-painful.html
