Is a gift expected for an engagement party?
If so what is appropriate?

When my husband's daughter got engaged, we threw her a party at our house, 35 people came, and she got a grand total of 4 gifts. No, it's not required, yes, some people choose to. The gifts were mainly from her fiance's family. Etiquette states:

Unless you have a bottomless pocket, we suggest you go light on the engagement gifts. Remember - you still have the shower and the actual wedding to spring for. Not to mention travel expenses, new attire, etc.

Gifts that will help the couple plan and organize their wedding will be much appreciated. If you are technically inclined, setting the couple up with a wedding web site would be a smash hit - especially if they are not!

A subscription to a bridal magazine is a great gift idea for the bride. How about a book on relationships written by a reputable author.

Hope this helps you.

I would not give a gift at an engagement party...getting engaged is special...but it still doesnt mean you'll make it to get married. when the couple is actually getting married is when I give a gift. I've never even known a couple who's had an engagement party.

No, no gifts for an engagement party. It's just a time to get together for drinks and visit.

Something small is most appropriate as the bride and groom will also be receiving wedding gifts.

I just give the woman something nice, like a card, or apicture of the two in a nice frame, or something to remember the moment by. I give the guy a bottle of booze

Yes it is. But what you should get is completely determined by the type of couple. They may have registered somewhere. Find out and then pick something from the list.
