There are different types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. The simple carbohydrates are things like white bread and other white flower products, white rice, sugary foods, foods that have little or no dietary fiber. The complex carbohydrates, which come from things like potatoes, brown rice, whole grains, vegetables and all fruits have dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is harder to digest than simple carbohydrates, so it turns to sugar in your system more slowly, which can give you that "full" feeling longer - a benefit if you want to lose weight. Simple carbs turn to sugar quickly, which cause your insulin to spike and then drop, which leaves you hungry and craving more carbs. Best to get carbohydrates in the complex form over simple form whenever possible.

Breads, rice, etc. Carbohydrates are a combination of three sugars, rendering them no longer sweet, but still fattening.

sweets and starches
potatos, cereal, rice, peas, fruits have about 20-30, any choclate or desert, bread, fruit juice
If your trying to avoid them good replacements are splenda for sugar and there are tons of varieties of squashes. Butternut squash tastes like yams. Spaggeti squash breaks apart into noodels to replace pasta, and a good alternative to potatos is steamed calliflower(sp) mashed.

potatoes, rice and breads are common sources, as are all sweets. Also, vegetables have carbs, with corn, peas and some beans being the highest.
Rule of thumb, if its starchy or sweet, it had higher carbs.
