Dear Morton,

I'm replying to your question on whether one should partake of tea with riff Raff. The answer as (you know) is a most definite NOT!!! If you lower your standard to riff Raff it will lead to all sorts of abandoning of the higher values such as, the gardener pulling his forelock in greeting as one canters down the lower field in ones morning fringle.

Please refrain from suggesting such abominable miss deeds.

Definitely not.
The riff raff would then expect a return invite and do you really want riff raff in your home?
Anyway it's only tea.
Had the riff raff invited you to an all expenses paid holiday on the Itialian Riviera then the risk would be worth considering.
But tea?
Pff

It depends on the sorts of riff raff they are! Some are quite charming, only appearing to look unacceptable. Others can not be trusted.

It is a matter of finding out first hand, I am afraid.

Actually Morton, one would decline politely. Perhaps invent a previous engagement. They would not know how to make a cup of tea (they would probably be MIF's - 'milk in first' - ugh!) and - horror of horrors - would probably serve the drink in a MUG!

Then, naturally, there is the question of simple hygiene.

No, Morton old bean, I'd pass on this one!

Unless you've seen mysterious boxes being carried out of their house at midnight then go. You might find that they're nice people. If they're not then at least you will have shown good faith.

Take a small gift appropriate to the occasion, e.g some cake if it's tea.

Go out of politeness - it's better to be on the right side of your neighbours if you can. You can also bring into conversation things that annoy you so they will know what the limits are. Have an excuse that you need to be somewhere at a certain time so you dont have to stay there all evening.

You can go and potentially have an interesting experience, or you can sit in a dark closet wondering how the universe began while licking pieces of dried celery and chanting "the cerery will kill you all" over and over and over.....now what sounds better?

Sure. It will be a great re con mission and they may turn out to be great fun. If not then you will be able to stop wondering about them. I reckon these days neighborliness is important. Yah never know when you might have to use their shower

If you don't like them, don't go. I hope you're basing your judgement on actions rather than just appearance though, for appearance isn't everything.
