Well...first of all, I disagree that Scientology is a cult, and no I'm not a believer of that either. I do believe that all people in some way feel the need to be accepted in society. Cults prey on naive and impressionable people that strongly feel this need for acceptance. Once they've been hooked in by this feeling of acceptance, the cult is easily able to brainwash.

Well if you are the kind of individual that likes to give their derogatory opinion by asking a question using a deliberate derogatory lable, then answering this question would give the impression that I agree with your opinion of Scientology...... which I don't.
But if you really want to know why people join any religious group best to individually ask them. Otherwise you are dealing with generalities which are rarely true.

The same reasons that people join mainstream religions: Emotional needs. For whatever reasons, the folks who join these groups are not feeling "fulfilled" or whatever by the mainstream faiths. Usually they are alone or suffering some sort of emotional upheaval. Along comes some charismatic fellow who makes them feel good and/or offers to make their problems go away and *poof*--they're in.
Just like a mainstream religion.

As the bible points out, people are sheep and there are many shepherds out there.
Actually Scientology and Branch Davidians are only minor cults. Cults such as Christianity (in all its sects) and Islam are far more successful at herding (and sheering) sheep.

I think that those activities and beliefs fill the need these people have to belong somewhere... or to believe in something or someone... I still think cults might be dangerous though when taken to extremes.

The same reason anybody has follows any religion. They're looking for something and if a group of people tells them what they want to hear, then they join up.

The Bible says that man's heart is evil, with that thought, mankind is looking for a god that fits their desires or tastes. They really do not want the God of the Bible who is in control and commands obedience. As a result they create their own religions.
