on windows 98 I can check the speed info is being sent by clicking on the computers icon. on my new laptop that has vista home edition I can't check the speed. I am on dial up, and sometimes I have to disconnect and redial several times to even get 26400 speed. Also I am having trouble disconnecting on vista.

One thing to remember about Vista is it makes everything quite sluggish. I'm not sure what kind of memory you have. I have 512MB RAM on mine and really, that's not enough. Perhaps it's a combination memory and the issues with Vista that are causing your problems.

To check your connection speed in vista you will need to go to the Network Connection properties, even though you are using dialup. 98 wasn't built for networking really, which is why this info was in a different place. Select the icon for the modem and check "status". This should tell you your connection speed.

The other thing you can do is just go ahead and spring for broadband, whether DSL, Cable, Wireless broadband, satellite, or any other kind you can find. This will eliminate this problem all together. Vista wasn't really designed with the Dialup user in mind.

The biggest diference is that Bill Gates is so much richer now. Seriously, try XP.

You should check the quality of your phone line.
