I have my expired passport, a copy (not the actual one, but a photocopy) of my birth certificate and my US drivers license. Can I cross into Canada by car?

Yes you should be fine crossing the border via car into Canada with those items. I would suggest that you bring your social security card with you for backup, but I don't see why there would be a problem.
The new regulations are only for flying into Canada, driving in the regulations are not set to change until January of 2008.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Yes, you should have no problem getting in to Canada with that ID. Be sure to take both the expired passport and the copy of the birth certificate. You may not need it to get into Canada, but you WILL need it to get back into the U.S. The new regulations for passport by land and sea will go into effect Jan 2008 at the very earliest, and possibly later.

Note: a social security card is not considered valid ID, and will not be accepted as such on either side of the border, esp. Canada.

If you do any shopping, be sure to keep your receipts for crossing back into the U.S.

You'll be fine with an official photo id (drivers license.) Your copy of your birthcert will help too.
Don't travel with your social seurity card. It's not needed and it's a pain to replace if you lose it.

(By 2008, you will need a passport for all travel between Canada and the US. For now, you only need it for air travel (because of new legislation introduced in Jan 2007.)

By car, yes, until the end of the year. Believe me, if you are hassled it is far more likely to be by the Americans on your return. (Just today, the Canadian Supreme Court unanimously ruled unconstitutional our form of a post 9/11 preventive detention law - which was only holding in custody 5 people - 3 of which were on bracelets - unlike your incarcerating hundreds and hundreds at your Guantanemo gulag. We have more freedom and liberty at present than you.)

Yes. But keep in mind that border guards are probably more powerful than any police officer. They can refuse you entry simply if they don't like your hair style.

you should be fine but you may want to bring your SS card for good measure. if you have the other things... you should be able to obtain that before going.
