They had open fires. The Holy Bible states that the people of that time made honey cakes and bread. Their bread was like a flat pancake and I think it was cooked on hot stone. They had an abundance of fowl, lamb & beef, and fish if they lived near open water. All of these things were cooked over an open flame. Their dishes were pottery which can withstand heat. They also ate lentils which would have had to be cooked in a pot. They had a variety of vegetables also. Remember Esau? He tilled the soil and grew an abundance of vegetables. I don't think the people of that time lacked anything...the only difference was the way in which they prepared it.

a thousand years ago really isnt that ancient, quite a few cultures had cooking utensils by then. I mean gee! thats only tenth century, all of europe and england ,ireland and china had metal by then.even 2 thousand years ago there were cultures who had metal cooking and eating utensils.the problem was no appliances so all cooking had to be done with fire in open pits or large ovens like kilns some communities had community ovens where youd bring your dough and wait your turn.egypt had raised bread where most of your nomadic tribes had a flat bread you cooked on an open fire.most cultures have a version of soup or stew,(hence the word supper)where you threw what you had into a pot to cook all day on the fire.and ate with bread.then at night you sat a pot on with grains or seeds to cook slow on the coals and tada! breakfast .even in cultures without metal they devised ways to stew food .in clay pots with hot stones or an animal skin strectched over a coal fire.the less settled peoples ate largely a protein diet .but there is proof that settled people found ways to prepare and preserve foods for 1000.s of years like the chinese cured and stored eggs, in other asian cultures you had their version of coleslaw( kimchee) different ways to pickle everything from meat to veggies and fruit. in europe coleslaw, and wines ,cheeses, they were making oil from olives 2000 years ago, drying figs, grapes, dates. the foods are the same it,s just with our fancy appliances we have more options as far as cooking method.

They had lots of different ways. In Ireland they cooked a lot in a trench sud into the ground which was filled with water. They wrapped meat in leaves, put it in the water and added stones that had been heated in a fire to make the water boil.
