A Specialist 4, or Spec-4, is a rank equal to corporal in the US Army. The difference is one of responsibility. A corporal is a junior NCO, whereas a Specialist is not. They have the same pay, but the corporal can perform duties that the specialist can't. Most E-5 Sergeants in the US Army today were never corporals. It is a rank almost exclusively within the infantry. specialists are in all MOSs (Military Occupational Specialties) of the Army.

i'ts an E-4. "Back in the day" the Army had specialist rank from E-4 all the way up to E-8. It was issued to non-combat arms specialty occupations (Medical, Mechanical etc) Seems the Combat arms guys were getting miffed that non-combat arms people could wear traditional rank, so this is what the Army came up with to stop it. It gradually faded away in the 60's and 70's except the "spec 4" rank. everyone gets that now except combat arms MOS E-4's that are in a command function, they get Corporal Stripes.

A specialist is an E-4. the highest rank for an enlisted soldier, you can go to Corprol, but that is usually temporary and just showing that you are in the process of being promoted to the next level, E-5 or an NCO. Most just skip the CPl. part, my husband did and everyone that I know did as well.

They are an E-4, the scale is ranked from E-1 Private thru E-9 Seargent Major. The higher you get the harder it is to get promoted. E-4 takes about 2-3 years to obtain. They are basically responsible for the mission of the troops directly underneath them, which at this point isn't a whole lot.
LORD EDWARDS is wrong... This is not a rank almost exclusive to infantry, it is the opposite, it is exclusively for trained specialty fields, hence the name of the rank.

It is an e-4, equivalent with a corporal but with no command responsibilities like in Infantry Units. Most are things like medics, or specialist trained jobs!

there are pay grades in the military. e1 = private (makes little to nothing.) e2= still private but pv2 (makes a little more than e1 but next to nothing still) e3=pfc or private first class small pay raise but next to nothing pus 10.00) e4= spc or specialist this is what you're refering to, been around long enough but not quite an (nco = non commisioned officer, the sgts and above) next to nothing plus $20.00. basically everyone gets paid next to nothing.
